Canadian CT Head Rule

Use this tool to assess whether a CT scan is indicated after minor head trauma. Based on high and medium-risk criteria to detect clinically important brain injury.

Applies to patients ≥16 years old with GCS 13-15 and witnessed loss of consciousness, amnesia, or confusion after blunt head trauma. Excludes seizure or anticoagulated patients.

Exclusion Criteria

Age <16 years?

Patient on blood thinners?

Seizure after injury?

High Risk Criteria

GCS <15 at 2 hours post-injury

Suspected open or depressed skull fracture

Basilar skull fracture signs

≥2 episodes of vomiting

Age ≥65 years

Medium Risk Criteria

Retrograde amnesia ≥30 min
